The Five Cards of Fate
Madam Eva laid five cards before the party in a Vistani tent along the Old Svalich Road. Each card carried a different omen: three pointed toward objects or places, one concerned the absence of a promised ally, and the last spoke of Strahd himself. The meaning of the reading remains uncertain. The following records only what Madam Eva revealed.
The Hierophant
Madam Eva said the first card spoke of ancient knowledge, doctrine written in blood, and truth preserved through authority.

She described a warrior laid to rest with fire and reverence, a loyal hound praised for his fury, and a treasure hidden beneath blackened bones. Her direction was simple:
“Find the Mad Dog’s crypt.”
She said that within it, “the devil’s story waits,” guarded by loyalty that did not end with death.
Known: A crypt associated with someone called the Mad Dog holds something tied to Strahd’s history.
Unknown: Who the Mad Dog was, where the crypt lies, and what exactly waits there.
The Moon
Madam Eva said the second card spoke of faith hidden from the sun and of a symbol once raised against darkness. She said the relic had burned those unable to bear its light, and that even Strahd had learned to fear its touch.

Her direction was:
“Seek the shrine of Mother Night.”
She said it lies “within the den of wolves, where faith was twisted to serve the hunt.”
Known: A powerful religious relic is connected to a Shrine of Mother Night and a den of wolves.
Unknown: Where the shrine lies, who or what Mother Night is, and who keeps the relic now.
The Tower
Madam Eva said the third card spoke of something standing alone.

She described:
“A tower rising from still water. Stone surrounded by silence.”
She said a blade waits there and gave this direction:
“Look for a wizard’s tower on a lake.”
She also warned that the wizard’s name and servant would help guide the search.
Known: A blade is hidden at or within a wizard’s tower on a lake.
Unknown: Which wizard, which lake, what servant she meant, and what dangers protect the tower.
The Fool
Madam Eva said this card should have revealed a great ally. It did not. She saw no hidden knight, priest, or champion written into fate. Instead, she described someone who steps forward without blessing, promise, or protection. Her final words were:
“You stand alone.”
The revelation weighed heavily on those who heard it.
Known: The cards revealed no destined champion who will join the party against Strahd.
Unknown: Whether allies can still be found, earned, or persuaded to help.
The Devil
The final card concerned Strahd.

Madam Eva called it the card of the master and spoke of:
“Chains mistaken for crowns.”
She connected Strahd to Barovia itself and warned that his fate cannot be understood apart from the land he rules.
Known: Strahd’s connection to Barovia is deeper than ordinary rulership.
Unknown: The nature of that bond, whether it can be broken, and what it means for confronting him.
What Remains
The cards gave directions, not answers. There is a Mad Dog’s crypt, a Shrine of Mother Night among wolves, and a wizard’s tower upon a lake. There is no promised champion. And Strahd is bound somehow to the land he rules. Everything beyond that must still be discovered.
