The Wolf-Jaw Stone
A split standing stone marking the correct branch of the upland route toward the werewolf pack’s territory in the limestone hills northwest of Zaleskiy Gorod. The name is Miklós Farkas’s — no older map records it.
Appearance
From above, an ordinary fractured boulder — the kind of stone the uplands produce and shed by the hundred. From lower on the slope, the opening resembles the jaws of an animal held open. Miklós used the visual as his marker: “If you can see the teeth, you walked too far.”
The stone stands roughly an hour beyond the last maintained pasture on the northwest track. A shallow drainage cut runs past its base; water disappears into limestone somewhere below. The stream vanishes underground here and rejoins whatever cave system Miklós found further into the hills.
Significance
The Wolf-Jaw Stone is the party’s primary route-anchor for the werewolf-den expedition that follows Ch 9 Miklós Farkas. All of Miklós’s later route notes (the Shepherd’s Wall, the concealed sinkhole, the upper route above the caves) reference distances and bearings from this stone. Without it, the drawings do not resolve to a real map.
In play
The party learns of the Wolf-Jaw Stone from Miklós’s testimony in Ch 9 Scene 4 (Chapel of Saint Sava). No parish map records it; no rural NPC other than Miklós has seen it in living memory. If the party questions Alexei about the stone after recovering Miklós, Alexei has never heard the name — but Miklós’s drawing plus Alexei’s six-month field-notes converge on the same general region, and Alexei’s map annotations describe streams disappearing into limestone in that vicinity.
