Tenebra

Shadow-plane pocket in the Ravenloft basin. Silver Dawn expedition site (3411). Origin of Vashti Merenne’s post-mortal existence. Vector for Edwin Locke’s warlock pact. Ch 15 relevant.

What Tenebra is

A pocket of the Shadowfell adjacent to Barovia, accessible only through specific portal-vestiges the Silver Dawn identified in 3411. Not a plane in its own right — a wound between planes, held stable by ritual anchors (some Silver Dawn, some older). Residents include shadow-touched Silver Dawn missionaries and Purifiers who did not return from the 3411 expedition, older shadow-beings native to the wound itself, and — increasingly since 3459 — Strahd’s Lasombra-lineage recruits.

The 3411 expedition

Elder Yordan Krăstev — Dawn Bound Purifier of the Silver Dawn (Gloom Stalker specialist) — led the Silver Dawn expedition into Tenebra in 3411 as part of a broader survey of Ravenloft-adjacent phenomena. His second was Vashti Merenne, Silver Dawn missionary corps. Twelve went in. Six returned. Six did not, including Vashti. The return manifest listed the missing as ‘lost to Tenebra’ — the phrase became bureaucratic shorthand and its actual meaning was quietly forgotten by later Church clerks.

Silver Dawn ritual masons buried a black stone Tenebra anchor beneath the Ashwain Field’s third circle in 3413 to keep shadow-touched residents tethered and unable to cross wholesale into the material plane. This anchor is what has kept Vashti alive and speaking for 51 years.

Communication

Tenebra residents can whisper across the veil to chosen recipients. Vashti has done so for at least two: Master Edwin Locke (her warlock ‘patron’) and the Ember Court (her scrying-medium role to Strahd, which she does not consciously recognize as such).

Ch 15 relevance

Severing Vashti at the Ashwain anchor (Ch 15 Scene 1) closes her voice’s reach into Barovia. Cuts the Ember Court’s live Ravenloft comms. Severs Edwin’s warlock pact. Opens the 24-36 hour Strahd-dark window for the Ravenloft under-dungeon infiltration.
