Rite of Willed Release
Rite of Willed Release
Silver Dawn severance liturgy for a shadow-anchored soul held in an intermediate state — typically Tenebra-anchored missionaries or Purifiers lost on Silver Dawn expeditions. Grants the peace their prolonged imprisonment has denied them. Central Ch 15 Scene 1 mechanic.
Purpose
To release a soul that a Silver Dawn shadow-anchor has held past death or full mortality — most notably Vashti Merenne, Silver Dawn missionary corps and second on Yordan Krăstev’s Silver Dawn expedition of 3411 to the Shrine of Mother Night, ‘lost’ to Tenebra, anchored to the black obsidian buried beneath the Ashwain Field’s third circle in 3413. Fifty-one years of unresolved witness end at the Rite’s completion.
Requirements
Site: the exposed shadow-anchor (excavated). For Vashti: the black obsidian block, 12 ft under the third circle of the Ashwain Field.
Officiant: a Silver Dawn-oathed cleric or paladin as concelebrant. Sister Ilma (Ashwain Cantor, Silver Dawn) is Halvek’s authorized concelebrant for Vashti’s Rite. Any Silver Dawn sub-order representative can co-officiate — a Templar Silver Blade, a Dawnwarden, or a Dawn Bound Purifier all carry the parent Order’s authority for this ritual.
Party concelebrant: optional but ideal — a Silver Dawn-oathed PC OR a Purifier’s Seal-bearing PC grants advantage on the officiant’s check.
Cooperation: if the anchored soul cooperates (Vashti will, if the party grants Edwin’s rehabilitation favor at DC 12 Persuasion), the Rite auto-succeeds. If the soul resists, the Rite must be performed against active shadow-vestige combat and DC rises significantly.
Mechanics
DC 15 Religion — cooperative subject. Sister Ilma rolls; PC concelebrant grants advantage. 20-minute duration; must be spoken in Silver Dawn liturgical (Church-Latin).
DC 20 Religion — resistant subject. If the subject resists, they are also combat-hostile as a shadow-vestige. The Rite must be completed while combat is suppressed.
Auto-success — if the subject grants a favor and the party agrees sincerely, the Rite succeeds without a roll. Intended Vashti-Edwin path.
Consequences
Subject dies peacefully. Any warlock pact grounded in the subject is severed (patrons wake from shadow-service). Any scrying anchor tied to the subject is broken. Physical fragments of the anchor may be recoverable as Concord artifacts. In Vashti’s case: half the black stone can be lifted intact and returned to Halvek’s inner sanctum as a Cathedral relic (+1 Cathedral standing).
Post-Rite indicators
A Wereraven or Silver Dawn cleric with a personal tie may dream of the release scene the following night — the shadow-touched figure kneeling to a woman in Silver Dawn colors, being embraced, and dissolving to dust. Confirmation.
