Overview

The Dawnbound Conclave exists to preserve, expand, and illuminate knowledge.

Among the Six Holy Orders, it serves as the scholarly heart of the Church. Its members oversee universities, cathedral schools, archives, libraries, observatories, hospitals, scriptoria, and laboratories throughout the known world. They educate clergy and nobles alike while preserving the accumulated wisdom of countless civilizations.

The Conclave teaches that ignorance is among humanity’s greatest enemies. Knowledge, honestly pursued and wisely applied, is itself an act of devotion.

Their guiding maxim is:

Truth is the first light of every dawn.

History

The Dawnbound Conclave emerged from the earliest cathedral schools established by the Church during the Age of Dawn. As civilization expanded, monasteries became centers not only of worship but also of literacy, medicine, astronomy, engineering, and natural philosophy.

Recognizing the importance of preserving learning, the Church organized these scholars into a dedicated Holy Order. What began as collections of scribes and teachers gradually evolved into a network of universities whose influence reached every kingdom touched by the Light.

Although its earliest foundations lie in England, the Conclave now spans the known world. Every major cathedral maintains a library, every bishopric sponsors schools, and every kingdom looks to the Conclave for educated administrators, physicians, engineers, and scholars.

Purpose

The Conclave exists to ensure that civilization never loses what it has learned.

Its members believe that every generation inherits both wisdom and responsibility. Ancient manuscripts are copied before they decay. New discoveries are carefully recorded. Scientific advances are shared. Dangerous knowledge is secured rather than destroyed.

The Conclave rejects the false choice between faith and reason. It teaches that truth cannot contradict itself. If careful study appears to challenge accepted understanding, scholars are expected to investigate further rather than retreat into fear.

To the Conclave, learning is worship.

Areas of Service

Members commonly serve as:

  • Professors
  • Librarians
  • Archivists
  • Historians
  • Wizards
  • Artificers
  • Physicians
  • Engineers
  • Astronomers
  • Cartographers
  • Architects
  • Translators
  • Cathedral educators
  • Museum curators

Many spend their entire lives in scholarship. Others accompany expeditions organized by the Silver Dawn or advise rulers through the Golden Lance.

Organization

The Conclave is organized around Collegia, great academic institutions attached to cathedrals and major cities.

Each Collegium contains specialized faculties devoted to:

  • Theology
  • History
  • Medicine
  • Arcane Studies
  • Engineering
  • Astronomy
  • Languages
  • Philosophy
  • Architecture
  • Mathematics

Students frequently travel between Collegia, creating a common scholarly tradition that spans continents.

Magic and Arcane Scholarship

Unlike many religious traditions, the Church does not regard arcane magic as inherently suspect.

The Dawnbound Conclave teaches that all lawful magic ultimately draws upon Anima, the sustaining power woven into Creation by the Creator. Divine miracles, arcane spells, primal traditions, and many magical crafts represent different disciplines through which that power is understood and responsibly employed.

Accordingly, the Conclave educates both divine and arcane practitioners together.

Its halls are home to:

  • Clerics
  • Wizards
  • Artificers
  • Paladins
  • Monks
  • Bards
  • Scholars of every discipline

Its greatest magical achievements include advances in warding magic, magical medicine, architecture, printing, navigation, astronomy, and the safe study of relics.

The Preservation of Knowledge

The Conclave maintains the largest collection of books and manuscripts in the known world.

Its scribes labor constantly to preserve ancient works threatened by war, age, or disaster. Expeditions sponsored by the Silver Dawn often return with manuscripts that would otherwise have vanished forever.

Not every text is made public.

Certain works dealing with forbidden rituals, dangerous entities, or catastrophic magical practices are sealed within restricted archives accessible only to trusted scholars and senior clergy.

The Conclave believes that dangerous knowledge should be safeguarded, not forgotten.

Science and Innovation

The Conclave encourages responsible innovation in every discipline.

Its physicians establish hospitals.

Its engineers construct bridges and aqueducts.

Its architects design cathedrals capable of standing for centuries.

Its artificers improve navigation, communication, printing, and agriculture.

Progress is viewed not as opposition to faith, but as one of faith’s highest callings when exercised with wisdom.

Relations with the Other Orders

The Conclave educates members of every Holy Order.

It preserves the histories of the Radiant Sun, supports the missionary efforts of the Silver Dawn, develops engineering and military doctrine for the Scarlet Dawn, maintains legal archives for the Golden Lance, and researches occult threats alongside the Purifiers.

Although it rarely commands armies or governs kingdoms, nearly every major institution of the Church depends upon its scholarship.

Public Reputation

Throughout the United Kingdoms, the Dawnbound Conclave is respected as the greatest center of learning in the world.

Its scholars are sought by kings, universities, merchants, physicians, and inventors alike.

While some regard its members as absent-minded or overly academic, few question the value of their work. A town that gains a Conclave school often sees literacy, commerce, medicine, and prosperity flourish within a generation.

Legacy

The Dawnbound Conclave has ensured that civilization remembers.

When kingdoms fall, its scribes preserve their histories.

When discoveries are made, its scholars record them.

When disasters strike, its archives safeguard what might otherwise be lost forever.

The Conclave teaches that civilizations are not remembered for the wars they win, but for the knowledge they leave behind.

GM Information

The Dawnbound Conclave should feel like a Renaissance university guided by a monastic tradition rather than a secretive cabal of wizards. Its members debate theology beside mathematics, medicine beside metaphysics, and engineering beside philosophy. They welcome difficult questions because they believe that truth ultimately leads back to the Creator.

The Conclave also provides the natural institutional home for many of A’erth’s unique concepts, including Anima, advanced magical theory, relic studies, the Hall of Severance, and the Church’s ongoing efforts to understand both the wonders and dangers of magic. Among the Six Holy Orders, it is the one most likely to produce the scholars whose discoveries shape the future of the world.
