Overview

The Purifiers exist to confront the darkness that hides beneath civilization.

Among the Six Holy Orders, they serve as the Church’s foremost authorities on undead, curses, corrupted relics, infernal pacts, occult conspiracies, and supernatural threats that cannot be addressed through ordinary law or military force.

Where the Scarlet Dawn fights open wars, the Purifiers wage quiet campaigns.

Where the Golden Lance seeks justice, the Purifiers seek truth hidden beneath deception.

Where the Radiant Sun comforts the afflicted, the Purifiers confront the source of affliction.

Most people will never knowingly meet one.

That is precisely how the Order prefers it.

Their guiding maxim is:

The brightest dawn casts the darkest shadow. Guard both.

History

The Purifiers emerged during the Age of Dawn after several seemingly unrelated disasters revealed a common cause. Entire villages disappeared without warning. Sacred relics became vessels for corruption. Trusted clergy secretly served infernal powers. Ancient tombs released horrors forgotten by history.

The Church soon recognized that conventional institutions were poorly equipped to confront threats that concealed themselves within ordinary society.

Rather than creating an army, it established a small brotherhood of investigators, exorcists, scholars, and hunters whose work would remain largely unseen.

Over the centuries the Purifiers became the Church’s last resort whenever darkness could not be confronted publicly.

Purpose

The Purifiers exist to prevent corruption before it becomes catastrophe.

Their members believe that evil rarely announces itself openly. It grows quietly through forgotten tombs, cursed objects, hidden cults, ancient bargains, and small compromises left unchallenged.

Accordingly, the Purifiers value patience, discretion, and careful investigation over dramatic displays of authority.

Their greatest victories are often those no one else ever learns occurred.

Areas of Service

Members commonly serve as:

  • Exorcists
  • Relic investigators
  • Vampire hunters
  • Undead specialists
  • Rangers
  • Demonologists
  • Occult scholars
  • Curse breakers
  • Crypt wardens
  • Monster trackers
  • Advisors to bishops
  • Custodians of dangerous artifacts

They rarely remain in one place for long.

Most spend their lives traveling wherever darkness begins to stir.

Organization

The Purifiers are organized into small autonomous Chapters, each capable of operating independently for months or years.

A typical Chapter includes several complementary specialists rather than large military forces.

Common members include:

  • Clerics
  • Paladins
  • Rangers
  • Rogues
  • Wizards
  • Artificers
  • Monks

Every Purifier is expected to understand theology, monster lore, investigation, survival, and the safe handling of dangerous relics.

Methods

Unlike the other Holy Orders, the Purifiers avoid public recognition whenever possible.

They seldom wear distinctive uniforms.

Many travel under the guise of pilgrims, scholars, physicians, or ordinary clergy.

When confronting supernatural threats they prefer:

  • Investigation before confrontation.
  • Containment before destruction.
  • Redemption when genuinely possible.
  • Annihilation only when necessary.

The Order teaches that ignorance creates as many monsters as darkness itself.

Relics and Dangerous Knowledge

The Purifiers maintain the Church’s secure vaults for artifacts considered too dangerous for ordinary study.

These include:

  • Cursed weapons
  • Corrupted holy relics
  • Infernal contracts
  • Necromantic grimoires
  • Vampiric artifacts
  • Objects touched by eldritch powers

Whenever possible such objects are sealed rather than destroyed, allowing future generations to study and understand the dangers they represent.

The Order works closely with the Dawnbound Conclave in developing methods for safely containing these relics.

The Hidden War

Most citizens believe monsters are uncommon.

The Purifiers know otherwise.

Their records document centuries of quiet victories against threats that never became public knowledge.

Entire villages have been spared because a single investigator recognized the signs of an ancient curse.

Kings have continued ruling because infernal conspiracies were exposed before reaching the throne.

Cathedrals have remained sacred because corrupted relics were removed before they could spread their influence.

The Order believes that civilization survives not because darkness is absent, but because someone remains vigilant against it.

Relations with the Other Orders

The Purifiers operate alongside every Holy Order while remaining institutionally independent.

The Radiant Sun often provides pastoral care after Purifier investigations.

The Silver Dawn requests their expertise when exploring ancient ruins or confronting unfamiliar supernatural traditions.

The Scarlet Dawn supplies military support when threats exceed the capacity of individual Chapters.

The Golden Lance assists in legal investigations involving occult corruption.

The Dawnbound Conclave researches many of the relics recovered by Purifier expeditions.

Public Reputation

Among ordinary citizens, the Purifiers are more rumor than institution.

Stories describe mysterious priests who arrive shortly before strange events cease.

Some believe they are monster hunters.

Others think they are wandering scholars.

Many dismiss them entirely as folklore.

Within the Church, however, bishops and senior clergy understand the invaluable service they provide, even if few speak openly of it.

Legacy

The Purifiers have preserved civilization not through celebrated victories but through forgotten ones.

They have sealed crypts before the dead could rise.

Destroyed cults before kingdoms fell.

Recovered relics before corruption spread.

Prevented disasters whose very existence has been erased from public memory.

The Order accepts this anonymity willingly.

Its members believe the greatest reward is not recognition, but waking to another sunrise because no one realized how close the darkness had come.

GM Information

The Purifiers should evoke the feeling of medieval investigators, monster hunters, and occult scholars rather than inquisitors or secret police. They are trusted precisely because they are restrained. They neither seek authority nor fame, and they avoid becoming judges or rulers. Their role is to identify supernatural corruption, determine its true nature, and recommend the least destructive course of action consistent with protecting the innocent.

In Crimson Twilight, the Purifiers are one of the few institutions that possess even fragmentary knowledge of the Black Sun Heresy, ancient vampire lineages, the Hall of Severance, and the hidden history of Anima. Even then, that knowledge is compartmentalized. No single Chapter understands every mystery, and many truths have been deliberately scattered among different archives to ensure that no single failure could place the world’s most dangerous secrets into the wrong hands.
