Barovian Soul-Cycle — At the Table (Homebrew Rules Addendum)
Barovian Soul-Cycle — At the Table
Homebrew rules addendum for running soul-cycle beats without derailing sessions. Complements the Undying Return, Dawn-Marked, and Consignment Prayer Lore records. Load into the Homebrew Rules doc at the next natural update pass.
Quick reference
• Barovian-born souls cycle on death. Reincarnate as new infants born to Barovian parents.
• Outsiders (including party PCs) do not cycle. Real death is real death for them inside Barovia.
• Vampires, Baali-claimed, Lasombra-vestige-embedded souls exit the cycle. So do souls Strahd true-kills.
• ~2-3% of Barovian souls carry cross-life memory (Dawn-Marked). Most cycle without memory.
• Cathedral has an archive. ~200 documented cases across 50 years.
Table-facing PC death rules
A PC killed inside Barovia is really killed. Standard revivify / raise-dead windows apply. If the party fails, they are gone. Silver Dawn resurrection availability at First Light is limited by clerical caster capacity (Sister Anya can revivify; Halvek can raise dead; consumable resources with material component costs).
The party’s outsider status is a stakes-multiplier the players should feel by mid-arc.
Silver Dawn funeral for a dead PC: full office minus the Consignment Prayer. Halvek or Sister Anya explains plainly: ‘They are not in our cycle. They go where they came from.’
Strahd’s cross-life advantage
Strahd does not cycle. He has watched the same Barovian souls return for centuries. Remembers everyone he has ever met plus everyone his agents have reported to him across fifty years of mist.
For NPCs: Strahd may name a Barovian-born NPC by a name from a previous life the NPC does not remember. Rare but powerful.
For party PCs (outsiders): Strahd cannot do this. Instead, at Ch 13.75 dinner Movement 1 (Naming), Strahd names them from outside-intelligence — Rahadin’s out-crossings, Vistani informants, Wereraven Express intercepts, Solomon Lumina reports. The Naming beat lands the same way — ‘I know who you are’ — but the vector is ‘I have taken time to learn about you because you interest me’ rather than ‘I remember you from before.’
Vistani children’s naming beat
Random-encounter texture per world-bible: ‘A Vistani child in the tavern doorway names one PC by a name only their mother used.’
Do not resolve this. Small, unsettling, unresolved. Vistani will not explain. Their answer to direct questions is a shrug: ‘She heard. She said. That is all.’
Ember Court soul-status quick reference
Ysara Vexleigh — Toreador-ghouled, near turning. Undead-permanent on death; does not cycle.
Ser Garien Thorne — Baali-branded. Baali-claimed on death; does not cycle.
Brother Caelan March — Lasombra vestige. Vestige takes him to Shadowfell; does not cycle.
Dame Alinora Pell — cycles. If she dies unturned, reincarnates in Barovia. If she turns and lives, stays in cycle. Her redemption is also soul-preservation.
Master Edwin Locke — cycles. Standard Barovian-born soul rotation, pact-severed on Vashti sever.
Ser Tristan Pell — vampire spawn. Undead-permanent; does not cycle. Mercy blade at Ch 15 = final death.
Ch 16 payoff at the table
When the Rite of Completed Witness completes:
1. The mists visibly begin to thin.
2. Every Barovian in the ritual circle senses something at the same moment — a quiet weight-lifting, a sense of loose air, sometimes tears. Silver Dawn clergy present recognize what it is: the containment mesh unwinding. This is felt, not mechanical.
3. Emil, Zuleika, Old Night pack fighters, Halvek, Sister Ilma — all sense it. The party (as outsiders) do not; they see the reactions of those around them.
4. Play the moment quietly. Someone (recommend Sister Anya if present, or Halvek, or a village Old Night wolf who has cycled twice) says something small — ‘I can feel it. It’s letting go.’
The retirement of the Consignment Prayer at the Cathedral’s next morning office is the true arc-close. Play it as the epilogue.
