Saint Sava the Watchful
Saint Sava the Watchful is the patron of shepherds, sentries, and things kept awake at night. His cult is one of the older Bulghar folk-saint traditions, dating from the early centuries after the Concord of Dawn and Dusk, and was widely observed in the upland communities that watched their flocks against wolves and worse.
Sava’s mark is a shepherd’s crook crossed over an open eye. It appears on lintels, on iron amulets given to children going out with flocks for the first time, and on the older gate-carvings of some upland chapels. Rural shepherds still know his prayers by rote; educated Cathedral clergy tend to know he existed but not what he was for.
Church de-emphasis
The Cathedral of First Light quietly de-emphasized Sava’s dedications in later liturgical revisions. Sava’s tradition centered on lay night-vigils — small groups keeping watch in the dark and reading each other simple prayers, without a priest present — and the Church wanted communal watchfulness centralized under sanctioned clergy in cathedrals. Older chapels dedicated to Sava were never officially unconsecrated. They simply stopped being maintained.
Rural belief holds that Sava’s chapels resist night creatures better than newer sanctuaries. This is a belief the Church does not endorse and does not contradict. Whether it has any real grounding is a question no one has systematically tested.
In play
Any PC with Religion training or rural upbringing recognizes Sava’s mark on sight (no check). DC 12 Intelligence (Religion) for others. Chapels dedicated to Sava tend to be found in upland areas served by circuit priests rather than the main Cathedral rotation. See the Chapel of Saint Sava location entry for a specific example.
