Moondew Tonic
“The first remedy every village healer learns. The last remedy many travelers hope to carry.”
The Moondew Tonic is the most common restorative draught found throughout A’erth. Whether brewed by monastery herbalists, village midwives, druidic circles, or licensed apothecaries, it represents the foundation of medicinal alchemy. Unlike many magical elixirs, the Moondew Tonic does not overwhelm the body with arcane force. Instead, it gently encourages the body’s own Anima to restore what has been wounded.
Although often spoken of simply as a healing potion, the Moondew Tonic is regarded by physicians as medicine first and magic second. Every region produces its own variation, yet nearly all follow the same ancient principles of careful harvesting, patient preparation, and respect for the natural rhythms of Anima.
Preparation
Traditional recipes combine four common ingredients:
- Moondew Petals
- St. John’s Wort
- Comfrey Root
- Wild Honey
The petals are gathered shortly after dawn while their healing properties remain strongest, then slowly infused with herbs before the mixture is preserved with wild honey. Properly prepared, a bottle remains potent for approximately one month when stored away from excessive heat and sunlight.
Most herbalists insist that haste ruins the tonic. Patience is considered as important as the ingredients themselves.
Cultural Traditions
Nearly every civilization brews a version of the Moondew Tonic.
The Church of Lathander blesses newly brewed batches at sunrise, teaching that healing begins with compassion before medicine. Missionaries and members of the Order of the Silver Dawn rarely travel without several bottles in their field packs.
The Solomons study the tonic as an elegant example of Anima working in harmony with natural remedies. They have catalogued hundreds of regional variations, comparing differences in soil, moon phases, and local plant life.
Druidic circles often substitute local herbs while preserving the tonic’s essential balance. Some insist Moondew gathered from ancient groves carries memories of the land itself.
The dwarves produce thicker preparations brewed with mountain herbs and mineral-rich spring water. Though less pleasant to drink, they are prized by miners and soldiers.
The island kingdoms frequently infuse the tonic with citrus blossoms and coastal herbs, producing lighter brews favored by sailors crossing the Western Sea.
Alchemy and Anima
The Moondew Tonic illustrates a principle understood by both alchemists and the Solomons. Healing does not come from forcing Anima into the body. Instead, the tonic encourages the drinker’s own Anima to resume its natural flow. For this reason Moondew Tonics remain effective across cultures despite differing recipes. The ingredients may vary, but each seeks to restore harmony rather than replace it. Solomon scholars often describe the tonic as “the simplest lesson in Harmonic Geometry placed within a bottle.”
Side Effects
Most drinkers experience little more than a pleasant cooling sensation spreading through the limbs as the tonic takes effect.
Repeated use within a short period occasionally produces unusual dreams or fleeting visions of pale lights dancing at the edge of one’s sight, particularly beneath Luna’s full moon. Herbalists generally regard these effects as harmless and temporary.
Availability
Because its ingredients are relatively common and its preparation well understood, the Moondew Tonic is widely available in most settled regions. Church infirmaries often distribute it freely to those unable to pay. Licensed apothecaries, traveling herbalists, military quartermasters, and caravan healers typically keep several bottles on hand. Even remote villages frequently know someone capable of brewing a modest supply.

GM Information
The Moondew Tonic should be the benchmark against which players judge all restorative alchemy. It is reliable, affordable, and familiar, appearing in nearly every civilized land despite local variations in flavor and ingredients.
Because the tonic works by encouraging the body’s natural Anima rather than overwhelming it with raw magical energy, it also provides an excellent opportunity to reinforce your campaign’s metaphysics. Experienced healers may remark that a patient’s Anima “accepted the tonic readily,” while a scholar might observe that brewing during Luna’s favorable phases produces more consistent results. Characters who spend time with herbalists, Solomon alchemists, or Church infirmarians should gradually come to understand that even the humblest healing draught reflects the same principles of harmony, balance, and Anima that underlie Circle Magic, the great cathedral rituals, and the ancient works of the First Civilization.
